Storm in a Teacup – A Construction Manual

In this blog, we’re not going to focus on the weather outside, but on the storm in a teacup (or in a PET bottle). We’re going to make a tornado!

Note: No tornadoes are expected in Switzerland this weekend . The thunderstorms expected this weekend will mainly involve heavy rain, small hail and gusty winds.

Ingredients list: What you need
You don’t need much to make a tornado in a glass of water: a mason jar, dishwashing liquid and optionally some glitter or paint.

Fill the jar with water, add a little detergent (glitter, paint) and screw the lid on tightly. Now turn the jar quickly in a circle a few times and voilà, a small foam tornado has formed. Note: Not every detergent is suitable (not enough foam is produced).

Tornado in the PET bottle

For another type of tornado, you need two PET bottles. Use glue (make sure it is PET or plastic glue) to glue the two bottle caps together and use a drill to drill a hole (approx. 0.5-1 cm) through both caps. Fill one get wp rocket for free bottle with water and screw the two bottles together using the glued caps.

To create the tornado, turn the bottle construction over so that the water can flow into the bottom bottle. While doing this, swing the bottles vigorously in a circle and a vortex is created that looks like a tornado.
